NCLCarers Support

Delivering the support that carers need across Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Haringey and Islington.

A stay in hospital can be stressful for the patient and for those looking after them. Uncertainty around discharge can add to that stress.

We know that carers need support and advice during such times and we have developed a programme to ensure you are able to access that support

How do I know that I am a carer?

It can be hard to know that you are an unpaid carer as most of us care for somebody at some point in our lives without thinking about it. However, caring can take a toll on those who are providing it. If you are providing support to someone who has illness, disability, frailty through age, or substance abuse or has a long-term condition – then you are a carer.
Unpaid carers are entitled to support and by registering with us, we will ask your local carers organisation to contact you.

Why should register? What support can unpaid carers get?

Through the North Central London Carers Support Project, you can now quickly and easily refer carers for support from their local carers organisation. Local carers organisations offer a variety of support to carers to support them in their caring roles.
If before referring you would like some more information as to what that support looks like, you can download our easy-read PDF guide – Carers Organisations Support Services.

About the Carers Support Programme

The Carers Support Programme is part of the North Central London Integrated Care System’s commitment to supporting carers. The aim of the programme is to make sure that carers get access to support at the earliest possible moment.

The programme is a partnership between the five local authorities in the North Central London area, our local health service and the five local carer support organisations.

Frequently Asked Questions

What hospitals are covered by this programme?

There are a large number of hospitals covered by this programme.  More information is available on our Hospital Information page.

I don't live in one of the 5 boroughs. Can I still get support?

The programme is aimed at carers and the people that they care for who live in North Central London – Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Islington and Haringey. However, if you do not live in one of these boroughs then we will still forward your details to your local carers organisation. If you study or work in the borough, get in touch with your local carers’ organisation to find out about what support they will offer you.

I am already registered with my local carers support organisation. Do I need to register again?

You may already be getting support from a carers organisation but if you feel that you need extra help during the discharge from hospital process, you are more than welcome to register via the portal.  The local carer support organisation will be able to support you further during what can be a difficult and challenging time.

I don't want to register. Can I still get support?

Of course. Below are links to the 5 carer support organisations.  You can contact the one that is appropriate to you and they will be able to help you.  Alternatively, get in touch with the discharge team in the hospital that the person you care for is being treated.  If you are concerned about the care that your or the person you care for is receiving in hospital, then you can contact the Patient Advice and Liaison Team.

Is there support available on the weekends?
Carers organisations are not open during the weekends or after 5pm on weekdays. If you require support whilst the person you care for is in hospital, then please contact their discharge team on the ward they are on. In emergencies, always dial 999.
